Hangman
Guess the word one letter at a time. Six wrong guesses and it's over.
About Hangman
Hangman is one of the oldest word games still played everywhere: a hidden word, a row of blank slots, and the slow-burn tension of guessing it letter by letter before your six wrong guesses run out. It began as a Victorian-era paper-and-pencil game and survived into every classroom, road trip, and phone in the world because the formula is perfect: simple enough for a child, but genuinely strategic the moment you start thinking about which letters to try first.
This is PlayZone's own build, written in-house and running entirely in your browser — no download, no account. Every round gives you a fresh word from a hand-picked, family-safe list along with its category hint (Animal, Food, Sport, Nature, Object, Place, or Music), so you are never guessing blind. Type on your physical keyboard or tap the on-screen A-Z keys, which colour themselves green or grey as you use them. Win rounds back to back to build a streak — your current and best streaks are saved on your device.
How to Play Hangman
A word is chosen and shown as a row of blank slots, one per letter, with its category above. Guess a letter: if it is in the word, every copy of it fills in instantly; if not, one more piece of the stick figure is drawn and your wrong count ticks up. Six wrong guesses complete the figure and end the round — the word is then revealed, with the letters you never found highlighted. Guess the full word before that happens and your streak grows by one. The New Word button deals a fresh round any time, and you will never get the same word twice in a row.
Strategy: Guess Like a Cryptographer
Hangman rewards exactly the kind of thinking codebreakers use — letter frequency, position patterns, and elimination:
- Open with vowels. Nearly every English word contains at least one of E, A, O, I, U. Two or three vowel guesses typically light up the word's skeleton at the cost of very few misses.
- Then hit the workhorse consonants. R, S, T, N, L are the most common consonants in English. The classic starting set ETAOIN-SRHLD exists for a reason.
- Use the category ruthlessly. A seven-letter Animal ending in shown letters -E is a very different search space than a seven-letter Food. The hint is not decoration — it is half the puzzle.
- Read the pattern, not just the letters. A revealed Q almost guarantees a U beside it; -ING and -TION endings announce themselves; a double blank between known letters often hides a double letter (LL, SS, TT, OO).
- Late game, count your lives. With one or two guesses left, stop exploring and commit: mentally list the words that actually fit every revealed letter AND avoid every failed one, then choose the letter that appears in the most candidates.
Why Hangman Belongs in Your Rotation
Under the simple surface, every round is a vocabulary retrieval workout — the same tip-of-the-tongue searching that keeps word recall sharp, and the reason word games hold their own in my roundup of memory games that genuinely work. It is also one of the friendliest games on the site for families: rounds are two minutes, the words are curated to be common and clean, and the category hints keep younger players in the hunt — it fits naturally alongside the picks in my parent's guide to free browser games.

FAQ
How many wrong guesses do I get?
Six. Each miss draws one more part of the stick figure — head, body, two arms, two legs — and the sixth completes it and ends the round. Correct guesses never cost anything, no matter how many letters they reveal.
What are the best letters to guess first?
Start with vowels — E, A, O, I — then the most common consonants: R, S, T, N, L. That set reveals the shape of most English words within a handful of guesses. After that, let the category and the revealed pattern guide you.
Do I get a hint?
Yes — every word shows its category (Animal, Food, Sport, Nature, Object, Place, or Music) above the blanks from the very start. Combining the category with the word length is the fastest way to narrow the candidates.
What happens when I lose?
The full word is revealed, with the letters you never guessed highlighted so you can see exactly what beat you, and your winning streak resets to zero. Your best-ever streak stays saved. Hit New Word and go again.
Does the game save my streak?
Yes — your current streak and your best streak are stored locally in your browser and shown on the scoreboard. They persist between visits on the same browser and device; clearing browser data or private mode resets them.
Are the words family-friendly?
Yes. The word list is hand-picked: common English words across seven everyday categories, with nothing obscure, nothing inappropriate, and no trick spellings. It is built to be fair for players of any age.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes — there is a full on-screen A-Z keyboard sized for thumbs, and the keys grey out as you use them so you never repeat a guess by accident. On a computer you can simply type.
